Seacoast Ultimate Summer League

What is Summer League?

The Seacoast Ultimate Summer league is a beginner-friendly ultimate league open to all ages of players. There is no requirement to know how to play Ultimate. Captains are volunteer instructors who will teach you the game. The game does require some athleticism and running so it is an excellent way to get some exercise. Here is an introduction to Ultimate and some simple Rules.

Players who join Summer League are placed onto teams using a team-forming process designed to produce even-strength teams by balancing the experience levels of the players throughout the league. In this way we hope that you will always be able to match up against another person on the other team with similar skills and experience.

This year will be a first for Seacoast Ultimate. Summer League will consist of both a co-ed "mixed" division and an open division. The mixed division will consists of teams comprised of equal numbers of men and women and points are played with either a 4:3 or 3:4 gender ratio (offense decides). The open division has no gender restrictions. For the official description from USA Ultimate see USA Ultimate Club Division.

The reasoning behind this is simply to accommodate as many players in the area as possible to play ultimate and also to make it a better experience for the women of the ultimate community. Both divisions will be playing simultaneously (same night, same time) to maintain the social aspects of the leagues.

When is Summer League?

Games are scheduled for Wednesday evenings starting at 6PM from early June to mid-August. Depending on when July 4th falls this typically results in 9 or 10 weeks where a game is scheduled. At the end of the regular season a final tourament is held on a Saturday in August where all the teams play a number of games. This format is similar to the weekend tournament format of play for ultimate and is used as an awards ceremony and a post-season party.

Fields and schedule information are still being determined but we will be back at the Cooperative Middle School in Stratham, NH.

How do I register?

Since both the open and mixed divisions are playing simultaneously, a person should only register for one division. There is a maximum number of men and women in the mixed division to maintain an equal gender ration. To find out more, and register go to Summer League 2011.

Our ability to run a summer league is in part due to the support of USA Ultimate, the non-profit governing body of Ultimate. USA Ultimate provides us insurance coverage for the use of fields but requires every player to be individually registered with USA Ultimate either on their own (current members) or through summer league. Through summer league is a $10 cost per individual. If you play more than just summer league in a USA Ultimate sanctioned events then it usually makes sense to just join USA Ultimate.
