Summer League Is Looking For Volunteers To Implement Change

January 19, 2012 6:12 PM EST

Seacoast Ultimate is looking for volunteers to assist in organizing the 10th Annual Summer League. We received some great feedback from the surveys conducted at the end of last year's league and need some motivated disc chuckers to help implement the new suggestions. Last year we expanded the Learning League to include both a true Mixed Division and an Open Division. This year we intend on keeping the expanded Learning League on Wednesday nights, but adding a separate Competitive League on Mondays to accommodate more of our community's needs. Players can play in both Leagues, if their schedules allow and provided they can mentally switch gears between the Competitive and Learning Leagues. Planning will begin full throttle come March. If you have interest in helping out at all, be it captaining, promoting, or taking on a larger responsibility role, please email me at justin(dot)warrington(at)gmail(dot)com. I will put together an organizational email list and schedule our meeting in March. Thanks!

Summer League Teams Are Set

June 3, 2011 2:26 PM EST

The Summer League teams have been drafted and hopefully you have been notified which team you are on at this point. There are many men who have found out that they are not playing mixed but are on an open team. This is an unfortunate consequence of the circumstances and of the decision to play mixed with equal gender ratios on the mixed teams.

The goal set in the spring is to accommodate as large a (strict) mixed league as possible. This implies accommodating every women and using the number of women registered to dictate the size of the mixed division. Without knowing how many women would register, there was no way to know how many men would be accommodated by the mixed division. Optimistically, mixed registration was left open for both men and women for the duration of the registration period.

When registration closed for Summer League, open had 37 players registered (35 men, 2 women), mixed had had 194 players (128 men, 66 women). The target was therefore set for 66 men to stay in mixed (to create a 50/50 ratio in mixed registrations) with the remaining 62 men moving to open division. Men were moved to the open division based on time of registration and lack of baggage. Here are some data point on the results:

  • Summer League registration at the time of closing had nearly a 3:1 men to women ratio (165 men, 66 women).
  • The last person to get into mixed signed up at 11:30 AM on May 3rd; registration opened the evening of April 28th which means mixed was filled in less than 5 days.
  • 12 of 66 men in mixed registered ‘too late’ but came over as women’s baggage.
  • Without consideration for baggage the last man to get into mixed would have registered at 6:36 AM on May 7th. Less than 9 days.
  • 81 of 128 men registering for mixed (63.2%) requested at least one other person in the "Same Team" field.

Despite having two divisions, we still think of Summer League as a co-ed league. All games are going to be played in Stratham with mixed and open games occuring at the same time on adjacent fields.

We thank you for your understanding as we attempt this new approach in order to provide ultimate to more people, to strengthen women’s ultimate in the area, and to provide a better experience for the women playing Summer League.

Summer League 2011 Registration Opening Soon

April 16, 2011 7:39 PM EST

This year marks a change in the Seacoast Ultimate Summer League format. There will be two divisions playing on the same Wednesday night. The two divisions are a strict mixed division (4/3 format, offense decides) and an open division (any gender, any ratios). The intent is to maintain the community and social aspects of Summer League, accommodate more players with an open division, and provide a better mixed experience by actually playing mixed with teams comprised of equal numbers of men and women.

Registration is scheduled to open on April 25, 2011 and will be closing on May 22, 2011 in order to formulate the teams, let captains contact their teams, and get shirts printed up. More details can be found at the Summer League page.
